Working at the intersection of design, technology, advertising, politics, policy, and privacy, David Carroll investigates the overlaps between data, media, and democracy. As an associate professor of media design at Parsons School of Design, he guides graduate students into design and technology careers with critical perspectives on the surveillance and information spaces they will build during their careers. Currently challenging the companies involved in the Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandals, Carroll's legal challenge in the United Kingdom is being criminally enforced by the Information Commissioner's Office while maintaining a claim in the High Court for full disclosure of his complete 2016 voter data set. Prior, he was CEO of Glossy, a machine-learning media platform incubated at NYC Media Lab and backed by Hearst Corporation in 2013 and former Director of MFA Design and Technology at Parsons from 2010. Research funded by government and corporate grants alike. Recent commentary published in WIRED, Boston Review, Motherboard.
